How's the Market?
Live market data, plus the part that actually matters: how to read it without drawing the wrong conclusions.

How to actually read a movers list
- A big % move on a tiny company means less than it looks. A $200M company jumping 40% is common and often driven by very little actual money. The same move in a $2T company would be extraordinary.
- Check volume, not just percentage. A large move on thin volume can reverse just as fast. Heavy volume means real conviction — lots of participants agreed enough to trade.
- Movers lists are a starting point, not a signal. By the time a stock appears here, the move already happened. Buying something because it's up 30% today is the single most reliable way to buy a top.
- Always ask why. Earnings? A drug trial result? An acquisition? A short squeeze? The reason determines whether anything has actually changed about the business.
The broader market
Individual stocks are noise; indexes are the signal. Before reacting to any single name, it's worth knowing whether the whole market moved that day.

Why the index matters more than the stock
- If your stock is down 3% and the S&P is down 3%, nothing happened to your company. The whole market moved. This is the most common source of unnecessary panic among new investors.
- Small-cap vs. large-cap divergence tells you about risk appetite. When the Russell 2000 badly underperforms the S&P, investors are typically getting defensive.
- A single day means almost nothing. Markets are noisy at the daily level. Judging an investment on one session is like judging a book by one sentence.
